How to Remove a Background from an Image

A practical guide to creating a clean subject cutout with PixelErase AI and understanding the browser-local workflow.

What is image background removal?

Image background removal separates the main subject from its surrounding scene and turns the unwanted background into transparent pixels.

How PixelErase AI works

PixelErase AI uses BiRefNet Lite ONNX in the browser. The page prepares the image, runs inference with ONNX Runtime Web, converts the predicted mask into transparency, and builds a downloadable result.

Choose a clear source image

Start with a reasonably clear image where the main subject is visible. Fine details such as hair, thin objects and similar-colored edges deserve extra attention.

Review the cutout

Use the checkerboard preview to inspect edges and look for leftover background pixels or missing subject areas.

Choose the right output

PNG is usually the most useful choice when you need transparency. JPG is better when you want a solid background.
